Shining the Gospel Light from WeeksvilleWelcome to Salem Baptist ChurchWeeksville, North Carolina
![]() Salem Baptist Church is located in Weeksville, NC a small farming community on the New Begun Creek just 10 miles south of Elizabeth City. We are a country church with good old-fashioned, conservative Christian values- and we are not ashamed of that! We love the Lord here, and we just focus on the Gospel, preaching the Word, teaching Sunday School classes, and doing what we can to love people and minister to the hurts of our community. All to the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ!
Our Purpose.....

A- Church where life-long friends are made
L-lifting up Jesus Christ in uplifting worship.

Some History...
Salem Baptist Church began as the Flatty Creek Church in 1790, located just 2 miles south of where we are presently located. A thriving church was formed, but within about 10 years, a doctrinial controversy made it necessary for a group of pro-missionary church members to relocate the church building to its present site. In 1803, this group formed the Salem Baptist Church on the Newbeggin. In 1806, the Chowan Baptist Association was formed and its first meeting was held at Salem.
In 1927, the church enlarged her facilities. A remolded sanctuary and sixteen additional Sunday School classes were added. In the 1940's a parsonage was built. In the early 1960's the church added a new social hall, kitchen, and educational wing.
Many other additions to the building were made over the years as the church has increased in size and spirit. In 2003, a newly remolded kitchen and social hall, renovated restrooms, and the additional bedrooms in the parsonage were completed.
In September 2003, the church grounds were moderately damaged by Hurricane Isabel. The building suffered the loss of roof shingles- but no permanent structural damage- just one week prior to the Bicentennial Celebration.
At Thanksgiving, 2007, the church broke ground for a new parsonage. See the update blog above for pictures. Projected completion is March, 2008.
The Lord has blessed our church with many great men of God. Perhaps the most notable was
Dr. Vance Havner (1901-1986).
![]() Dr. Havner wrote many books and became a famous Bible teacher and Evangelist
He served twice at Salem: 1923-24, and 1934-35.
